New big LEGO Technic challenge competition this fall

Some of you might wonder if we will start the LEGO Technic challenge soon, as it has been the tradition for the past couple of years. So we want to give you a little update on what you can look forward to this year.

Technic Super Cars

The history of LEGO "Super Cars" is even longer than the Technic line itself, beginning in 1977 and running right up to the present day.

Winter is coming!

Winter means snow, if you’re lucky, depending on where you live. Snow also means less traction, and therefore gives an extra challenge for almost all driving vehicles.

Historical Technic Supercars

Supercars in LEGO Technic has been around for many years. The very first LEGO Technic Supercar was the 853 “Car Chassis” from 1977 and is still considered to be an important milestone in the LEGO Technic model history. The 853 had functions like working piston engine, a two step gearbox, a steering system and adjustable seats. The 853 was built as a chassis-only model to allow for the builder to put his/her own creative design on top of it.

Fernando: Unimog Implements

As Markus already explained, the Unimog is a versatile platform characterized by the huge diversity of implements (or attachments) that are possible to develop, for as many applications as you can imagine for this vehicle.

Unimog Implements

The Unimog U300/400/500 is also called the universal implement carrier, and universal is the right word, it can be anything from a crane, fire truck to a kind of train. The Unimog has a unique standardized attachment interface in the front and back, with a PTO (Power take off) a splined driveshaft to provide power to an attachment.

Unimog History

The Unimog celebrates its 60th anniversary jubilee and it was a great honor to build the first time a replica in Technic bricks. The Unimog is one ultimate vehicle for off-road use and common for all is its 4x4 drive with high ground clearance with big tires and great axle articulation combined with a powerful diesel motor. Designed to take a large number of different implements the Unimog can easily used as a front loader, backhoe, snowplow, dumper or argricultural tractor.

Sports vehicles can be many things, but are basically powerful vehicles that generate the sensation of freedom. Often these vehicles are made to bring you a lot of adrenalines and are also easy to use. But most important they first of all offer a lifestyle!

How does a helicopter fly

A helicopter is one of the most manoeuvrable flying vehicles that exist today. This gives the pilot the possibility to manoeuvre the helicopter into a three-dimensional space like no airplane can do. The pilot can virtually fly the helicopter almost anywhere you can think of. However, the task is not easy. The pilot needs to be able to think in three dimensions and use both pedals; the collective control and the direction stick to maintain the helicopter flying.

Designing the 8070 Supercar

The 8070 Supercar was a really nice challenge and took around 5 months to complete, from the first prototypes were made until the final model was ready. The final model contains 1,281 LEGO Technic elements.

This year we expanded the system with a new smaller linear actuator in the 8069 Backhoe Loader.

We are all very busy over here, but we keep an eye on the competitions daily and are all very impressed with all the models we see, not only the finalists, but out of all the hundreds of submissions we get we see a lot of good and very inspiring models.

My favorite LEGO Technic set

For me, it is fairly easy to point just one favorite LEGO Technic set of all times. It was the most acclaimed set at the time I returned to building with LEGO bricks in my adult life - the 8421 Mobile Crane.

The 8421 set came with many innovations that were not present in the LEGO Technic world when I was a kid. It was made mostly of liftarms, but used the regular Technic bricks as well. It included new bevel gears in many sizes, some new pneumatic parts, beautiful and realistic wheels and a very interesting electric motor...

One of the key points about LEGO Technic models, is their potential to make us learn something on how real stuff works.
And that’s what most excites me about the models from this theme. To observe the mechanisms, understand how they work and many times from there, to get into the working principles used in real machines.

There have been many Technic sets that made me gaze upon and sigh, but still I wanted to choose just one to mention here today...

My favorite LEGO Technic set

Choosing only one Technic set as my favorite is very difficult, if not impossible. This is not only because there are so many good sets, but because I like different sets for different reasons. My favorite period for Technic is probably from about 1994-1996 because there many large, complex models during this period which were also very fun to build. I'll describe a couple of them.

The name of this set says it all. It is a VERY mechanically complex model with 4 wheel drive...

How did one gets addicted to LEGO Technic

Technic addicted, me?! No... ;)

I started to play with LEGO at the age of 3, when I was given some Basic and later some LEGOLAND sets.

We were in the early 70s and there was not much more than vehicles, a few houses and some early LEGO trains.

Once I also got one LEGO 'Idea Book' and I remember trying to build whatever I saw in my surroundings, with the bricks I had, which culminated into a sort of... vacuum cleaner... :P

How I became addicted to Technic

In the early 1990's I was collecting only Space sets and trying to get all of them. Surprisingly, I had never owned a Technic set, and I was actually being careful not to buy them. Since I work in engineering for a living, I knew I would become addicted if I started Technic, and I thought I already had enough LEGO! I was very naive. ;-)

My Addiction to LEGO Technic

My addiction to LEGO Technic started when I was around 12. My dad, who was working in Germany at the time, gave me the 8815 set (a small go-kart) because he considered LEGO Technic to be the best toy for me. It turned out he has been right - I've been deeply fascinated by the set, by its steering system and piston engine. It has given me a lot of ideas and I wanted to have more sets in order to try these ideas out. Over the next couple of years I have collected more sets, mainly the small ones, the largest one being the 8830 Rally 6-wheeler. I have also gotten the 9615 set including...
